In the 1940s and 1950s, self-report studies of crime were made because criminologists were worried that official measures of crime were systematically biassed and gave a skewed picture of what crime is and what causes it. Self-report surveys are usually given to young people, though there are some exceptions. The NYS uses confidential, face-to-face interviews to find out how many times something has happened. Two different sets of responses are used.
